The one thing all of us in the family like is astromomy so we just bought a nice telescope.
We bought a Meade Starfinder 6 then traded it back in for the 8 incher.
2 inches more is always better!
Here's a picture of the scope and my daughter.
The skys around here are not the best for viewing because we live very close to one of the high schools. The lights in the parking lot can really mess up the sky. But we can find objects of 4.5 mag on most clear nights. We've even gotten 8.0 mag on a very clear night. That night we found M32 while looking for M31. Right next door to each other. One night we even found the Ring Nebula (M57) and the Dumbbell (M27). Suprised me! We joined the The Columbus Astronomical Society. Here's a picture of a bunch of us at our cookout in 1997 in front of Perkins Observatory. It was our 50th anniversary cookout party for the club. I'm in the center of the third row in a black shirt with dark hair and a mustache. I also do volunteer work at Perkins Observatory. Stop up sometime to check out the show!
One more note.. Perkins Observatory will loose their funding fron OSU August 1, 1998. Anyone that can help us keep a major part of Ohio and astronomy history open so the public can enjoy the sky is asked to contact Perkins Observatory. Public shows are going on year round every friday and saturday nights except the second saturday of the month. The Columbus Astronomical Society. meets there on those nights. The public is still welcome but there is no show. Thanks for any help!
